What Is CSE?

Child Sexual Exploitation, or CSE, refers to the exploitation and sexual abuse of a child.

According to Darkness To Light, a non-profit organization that’s committed to empowering adults to end child abuse, “Child sexual exploitation involves situations, contexts or relationships in which a person under 18 is given something, such as food, accommodation, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, affection, gifts or money in return for performing sexual activities or having sexual activities performed on them.”

CSE can occur at any time, anywhere. It can happen in places like homes, schools, and neighborhoods, however it can also occur online. Online CSE happens when technology or the internet is utilized to sexually abuse a child.
Some examples of CSE occuring online are :

• Creating or sharing child pornography/sexual abuse material.

Grooming, or building a relationship, trust and emotional connection with a child, so that the groomer can manipulate, exploit and abuse them.

• Engaging in communication with a child that is of sexual nature.

In fact, experts estimate that 1 in 10 children are sexually abused before their 18th birthday.
30% of children are abused by family members. As many as 60% are abused by people the family trusts. About 35% of victims are 11 years old or younger.
Children are NEVER at fault, they are victims.
Victims of child exploitation suffer from educational difficulties, low self-esteem, depression, and trouble forming and maintaining relationships.
